A native Phoenician, Dr. Nelson graduated valedictorian from Horizon High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. There she earned such honors as Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Nelson obtained her medical degree from The University of Arizona College of Medicine, where she received the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha distinction and was named Arizona’s 2001 Outstanding Senior Medical Student in Family Practice.
Following medical school, Dr. Nelson completed three years of specialty training in Family Medicine at Banner Good Samaritan where she served as Chief Resident and was nominated for the James-Grobe Award for excellence in Family Medicine.
Dr. Nelson is the founder of Desert Ridge Family Physicians. It was her dream to create an environment that would foster building lasting relationships with her patients. Although she truly enjoys working with the wide spectrum of patients and diseases she encounters on a daily basis, Dr. Nelson has special interests in preventive medicine, chronic disease management, pediatrics and adolescent care.
Currently Dr. Nelson is working with Innovation Health Partners to improve healthcare delivery in the community. While she is doing work on this worthwhile project, her hours and ability to accept new patients will be limited.
Dr. Nelson is happily married and has three wonderful children. She enjoys movies, camping, watching sports and spending time with her family, friends and two Labrador Retrievers.
Dr. Nelson was honored by US News and World Report when she was named as one of nine Top Doctors in Family Medicine for Phoenix in 2012.
Dr. Nelson has been honored four times as one of Phoenix Magazine’s Top Doctors for Family Medicine in 2009, 2017, 2019 and 2021 in their annual lists of the Valley’s top physicians. In 2021, she was distinctly honored to be named the top vote getter for Phoenix in Family Medicine.
